Unlocking GST Refunds For Indian Exporters

Under GST, exports of goods and qualifying services are treated as zero-rated supplies. This framework is designed to ensure that taxes do not become a cost embedded in the international supply chain.

For exporters, however, accumulated Input Tax Credit can create a significant working-capital blockage. Correct documentation, reconciliation and timely refund filing can help businesses recover eligible amounts efficiently.

GKS & Associates We assist exporters with GST refund planning, LUT compliance, ITC reconciliation, documentation and GST–ICEGATE coordination to create a structured refund process.

Export Refund Strategy

Export without unnecessary tax burden. Reconcile your ITC. Recover eligible refunds.

Choose The Right Zero-Rated Export Route

Exporters can generally structure their GST exports through different mechanisms depending upon their cash-flow requirements and eligible Input Tax Credit.

ROUTE 01

Export Under LUT

Export qualifying goods or services without payment of IGST by furnishing the required Letter of Undertaking, subject to applicable GST provisions.

LUT is furnished electronically through the GST system.
Export is undertaken without payment of IGST.
Eligible accumulated ITC may be claimed through the applicable refund process.
Particularly useful where significant domestic purchases generate ITC.
ROUTE 02

Export With Payment Of IGST

In eligible cases, the exporter pays IGST on export and subsequently becomes eligible for refund of the tax paid through the prescribed mechanism.

IGST is paid at the time of export.
Available eligible ITC may be used subject to applicable provisions.
Export and customs data must align correctly for automated processing.
Suitable where the prescribed refund mechanism fits the exporter's circumstances.

Faster, Connected & More Structured Refund Processing

Export refund processing increasingly depends upon accurate digital records, system matching and consistency between GST and customs data.

Provisional Refund

Eligible refund applications may qualify for provisional refund mechanisms subject to the conditions, verification and procedures prescribed under GST law.

Automated System Checks

GST and customs systems increasingly depend on accurate matching of shipping bills, invoice information, port details and other export data.

Digital Refund Processing

Properly structured electronic records and supporting documentation can make refund processing more organised and reduce avoidable discrepancies.

A First-Time-Right Refund Strategy

GST refund applications can face delays when turnover figures, Net ITC, export invoices, shipping bills or supporting documents do not reconcile correctly.

Refund Computation We review the applicable refund formula, turnover figures and eligible Net ITC to structure the claim accurately.
FEMA & Realisation Review For export of services, we review relevant foreign remittance documentation and supporting evidence as required.
GST–ICEGATE Reconciliation Export invoices, shipping bills and related records are reviewed for consistency across relevant systems.
Deficiency Memo Prevention Our pre-filing review focuses on identifying documentation and reconciliation issues before the refund application is submitted.

Managing Inverted Duty Refunds

Where eligible inputs are taxed at a higher rate than the outward supply, accumulated Input Tax Credit may arise. We analyse the applicable GST provisions and determine whether an inverted duty refund opportunity is available, while ensuring the relevant calculations and documentation are properly supported.

GST Export Refund Document Checklist

Proper documentation is one of the most important components of a successful export refund application.

Export Of Goods

Export invoices showing the applicable IGST or LUT reference.
Shipping Bills and relevant customs documentation.
Export General Manifest or equivalent evidence of export.
Bank Realisation Certificate or relevant realisation evidence where applicable.
Applicable GST refund statements and supporting annexures.

Export Of Services

Service Agreement, Purchase Order or relevant commercial contract.
Foreign inward remittance documentation as applicable.
Export invoices and corresponding GST records.
Applicable GST refund statements and supporting annexures.
CA certificate or other prescribed certification wherever applicable.

Turning Export Refunds Into Recoverable Working Capital

Export refunds represent valuable working capital for businesses operating in international markets. A mismatch between GST returns, export invoices, shipping documents or realisation records can result in unnecessary queries, delays or deficiency communications.

At GKS & Associates, our approach goes beyond simply submitting a refund application. We review the underlying transaction, reconcile relevant records and examine the supporting documentation before filing wherever possible.

Our objective is to create a properly supported refund claim that is consistent across the relevant GST, banking and customs records, helping exporters recover eligible amounts with greater confidence.
